The first time I watched this video was on September 19th and it took me exactly 2 hours and 46 minutes. I started taking notes and since then have watched the video about 5 more times and refined my notes. At this point the notes (the following) are composed mostly of quotes accompanied by the time they appear in the video.

Dates that I’ve worked on this post:

20110919

20110929

20111018

———————————————

the question:
[0:20]
“The relationship between art and philosophy” by way of “talking about what’s exactly the opposite of art and philosophy which is the ideology”

[0:55]
“…we could define ideology as a kind of social unconscious”

[3:17]
Althusser is “…rereading Marx through the grid of Structuralism

[4:20]
His (Althusser’s) work on ideology (in part) comes from an “…intuition that he had from scratch that ideology works exactly like the unconscious…”

[4:55]
“As you know in the Marxist reading of history the subject of history, the leading character of history, is the proletariat (the working class). The main agent of the historical process is (according to the Marxist theory) the Proletariat. So the main agent is a social group…”

[5:50]
“Althusser is refining this by saying history is a process without subject… It’s a structure that grows and develops by it’s own means.”

[6:30]
“The subject is produced by intersubjectivity and this intersubjectivity has something to do with ideology.”

[6:45]
“He (Althusser) says it (Ideology) is a representation of the imaginary relationship of individuals to the real conditions of existence.”

[7:15]
“And this set of imaginary relationships is linked to something which is real, which is the real conditions of existence of people”

[7:25]
Althusser refines this idea: “The function of ideology is to insure the link between people throughout their forms of existence–the relation of the individuals to their tasks set by the social structure.”

[8:10]
“Ideology is not a content. It’s a specific relation between people. And more precisely a relation of subjection.”"

[8:25]
The Calling Out

[9:40]
“According to Althusser the subject is constituted by an ideological hailing, like a police officer calling you in the street. Which means from the outside. Ideology in this way is a kind of factory of the subject. Today what would play this role? for example it’s advertising”

[10:08]
“Advertisings, poster bills hail you. They are transforming you–if you feel called out by them, if you recognize their call–they transform you into the subject of the consumption sphere. You’re transformed into a consumer (assuming that you’re part of this ideology) transformed into a very specific type of subject–it’s a subjection”

[11:30]
“…societies are structured exactly like a human unconscious, and they are functioning the same way and so they are also a language. So every environment is structured like a language… It’s a linguistic system that we’re caught in. More precicely are two things that determine the scope of our experience which are desire and language. So our social environment is a linguistic fact. Even if we don’t recognize it… It is this language that the artist has to master and articulate in some ways…”

[12:45]
“any human society is a way to speak the language of reality”

readymade and cinema function the same way

[15]
Postproduction – using the “already done/already produced”

[16:30]
“The DJ uses already existing elements in order to reorganize a chain of sounds…”
“rearticulation based on an interpretation of reality lived in… that is the basis of”

“an artist can postproduce reality”

“always already a subject – Althusar”

we are living in a bigger (cultural/society) unconscious

[22]
Marx – Transindividual… “The sum of our relations is human nature”

[28]
“…in the last 30 years we’re obliged to synchronize on a global level…” history and art

[29:30]
“this synchronization was the main and best (according to me[Bourriaud]) affect of Postmodernism ”

[30]
“…imaginary subject like the Proletariat for Marx can not exist today…”

[31]
‘…I firmly think that the leading character of the history/political process is the removed or the divested, the restless… The individual who is powerless among the economic globalization… the individual that has no power in front of history (in some ways)…

[35:55]
“…we are living in a world where invisibility has become the norm in some ways. Where the immateriality of the fluxes has become the norm. That is what art is in a way trying to fight against–either by embodying the forces (the economic fluxes) or by trying a way to represent them through the abstract grid.”

[37:50]
Jean-Claude Milner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Milner)

[39]
“… the beholder (according to Duchamp) plays on the same chessboard as the artists. Both are playing the same game. And he doesn’t think of his works as producing contemplation but a game–a kind of diologue between the two…

***Duchamp lecture Huston 1957 …explains there is a kind of share between the beholder and artist. And its a game, not only a game but a kind of fight and both are actually equal on the same board…”

[41]
“Relational Aesthetics was the description of this symbolic redistrobution of the active and the passive into the art process (I would say[Bourriaud]). Sometimes it can be the construction of a community where the active and passive are not discriminating any more.”

[43:15]
“…it’s not live but afterwards…”

[44:10]
“In conclusion I would say that art (in a way) stands for maintaining activity within the process of reification that I was describing… …it precaritizes reality… …it shows us that everything that surrounds us is nothing but an ephemeral construction that’s the product of the enter-human relations that we have been weaving together. To be able to act on history, to be able to be political one has to know that what surrounds him or her is ephemeral and is not a nature it’s only a fragile construction. that’s what I call The Precarious. And this political task… Maintaining Precariousness”

[47]
“from this.. (the lecture–about ideology) …one could define art and philosophy as a permanent process of (I can’t understand the word here)… …viatorization of all the elements, all the forms that constitute any human society”
